What is the mission and purpose of your student group?

The purpose of our group is to support varsity athletics, and to
enhance the Stanford community and raise school spirit with
public musical performances.

Why are you requesting Special Fees?

The Stanford Band is requesting Special Fees because we are a
large organization that services a majority of the student
population, and we require a lot of equipment in order to operate
effectively. Unlike other PAC-10 marching bands which are funded
completely by their athletic departments, though, the Stanford
Band relies heavily upon ASSU funding to ensure its continued
operation. The Band is an integral part of the Stanford
experience, and needs student funding to continue its
contribution to the life and spirit of Stanford, and ultimately
its unique and creative environment.

What are the three largest line item requests in your budget and why?

The three largest line items in our budget are 7410 - equipment,
7430 - equipment maintenance, and 6240 - casual labor. Our
equipment budget is so large ($24,200) because this item covers
most of the expenses of the Band, from acquisition of new
instruments to consumable music supplies to uniforms for Dollies
and Tree, as well as tools and props for our field shows. The
equipment maintenance item ($12,700) reflects the high cost of
the upkeep of our instruments, uniforms, and facilities. Our
casual labor expenses ($12,000) go to funding security at our
fall and spring all-campus rallies (band runs) to ensure the
safety of the students who attend.

If you applied for Special Fees last year, is there an increase in the
amount you're seeking this year? If so, why?

While the amount that we are seeking is a 7.5% increase from the
amount we received last year after our appropriations committee
review, our budget for the coming school year also includes a
1.1% decrease from last year's proposed budget. This reflects
the ongoing attempt by the band management to increase the
efficiency of our spending. We have tried to optimize our
expenditures to avoid extraneous funding because we are sensitive
to the fact that much of the equipment and the instruments we
require are expensive.
