Argument in Opposition to the Stanford Daily Joint Fee
The Graduate Student council (GSC) recommends that graduate
students vote NO on The Stanford Daily (The Daily). The GSC voted
not to place The Daily's special fee request on the ballot. The
Daily was placed on the ballot after they successfully petitioned
15% of the student body.

The primary grievance with The Daily special fee request is the
fact that the organization is essentially a fiscally
self-sufficient entity, which is reflected in its budgets. First,
for the past five years, The Daily has consistently earned
revenue. Projected revenue estimates demonstrate that 2005 will
be no different from prior years. Secondly, The Daily not only
has access to funds in its regular account, but the Friends of
the Daily (FOTD) account as well, which currently stands at
$919,000. Lastly, for four of the five last years, The Daily has
made contributions to the FOTD account that either equal or
exceed the amount of money it received in special fees from
students. This action indicates that The Daily can successfully
operate without special fees.

The GSC feels that providing special fees to The Daily would not
be a prudent use of student money. The Daily is fiscally
self-sustaining and able to support itself without special fee
funds. For these reasons, the GSC recommends that students vote
NO.
